Where to find your VIN

On most cars it is on a plate at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver's side, on the driver's door pillar, and on the registration documents. Cars built before 1981 have shorter VINs (11 to 13 characters), usually on a plate on the dashboard or the door pillar.

How the lookup works

17-character VINs (1981 on) are decoded with NHTSA vPIC, the vehicle database of the US Department of Transportation. It knows vehicles sold in the United States; for other markets it often only identifies the maker. Pre-1981 GM, Ford and Chrysler VINs are decoded from the makers' formats, which give the make, the model year and, for some series, the model. NHTSA vPIC
